The primary purpose of the Reading Specialist is to work with students experiencing reading difficulties, as a literacy or reading coach, or as a supervisor or coordinator of reading/literacy.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
• Reports directly to the building Principal
• Works cooperatively with other administrators, supervisors, staff, parents and students to perform job responsibilities as outlined
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The employee will be required to perform any other position-related duties requested by the Superintendent.
- Provide diagnostic testing to determine pupils reading problems.
- Assist classroom teachers in selection of students needing special reading instruction.
- Provide diagnostic, prescriptive and evaluative services for identified students.
- Provide individual and small group instruction for identified students.
- Assist with the administration of local and state reading assessments.
- Confer with the principal on the needs of the reading program.
- Act as a resource to regular classroom teachers by assisting them in organizing their reading program, selecting materials, suggesting teaching techniques, etc.
- Determine reading programs appropriate to a pupil’s reading difficulty.
- Establish high standards and expectations for all students for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.
- Plan and implement sequential learning experiences for students using a variety of instructional strategies, consistent with the District and school’s philosophy, mission statement, instructional goals, school level objectives, and the Core Curriculum Content Standards.
- Maintain a comprehensive inventory of instructional materials and resources.
- Conduct classroom visitations and provide feedback to teachers and administrators on the school’s literacy program.
- Participate in collaborative instructional planning.
- Serve as a resource in the areas of reading for teachers, administrators and the community.
