POSITION TITLE:  Director of Communications

SALARY: Commensurate with Experience

 

 

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Director of Communications works closely with the Superintendent and members of administration to proactively and transparently communicate district information to students, staff, community, and stakeholders, on behalf of the District.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports directly to the Superintendent.
  • The Audio-Visual Support and Production Specialist reports to this position.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and maintain a marketing plan designed to "brand" the district and its schools including district publications, calendar, recognitions, events, etc.
  • Develop and monitor metrics of success for overall communication.
  • Act as crisis communicator and assist in drafting communication when necessary.
  • Coordinate the creation and dissemination of effective internal and external communications and media relations (Newsletters, Podcasts, etc.)
  • Establish effective community relations and public engagement plans.
  • Manage the district’s mass communication, website, and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X, etc.).
  • Seek and implement creative means of communicating with all district stakeholders for an overall strategic communications plan.
  • Responsible for all district publications (writing, editing, videography, photography, etc.).
  • Maintain level of expertise with required knowledge to perform duties through engaging in and providing meaningful professional development to all staff.
  • Coordinate regular meetings with key district personnel to identify topics and events.
  • Provide perspective policy development from a communications perspective.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

 

 

 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in public relations, journalism, or similar experience within education.
  • Experience in communications, public relations advertising, and/or journalism.

 

COGNITIVE/COMMUNICATION ABILITIES:

  • Ability to read, write, and interpret for meaning/purpose
  • Ability to use correct grammar, sentence structure, and spelling
  • Ability to compose clear, concise sentences and paragraphs
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions
  • Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries and complaints
  • Proficiency in the use of technology (including various computer software programs) and be able to operate a variety of office equipment
  • Competence in technology, including but not limited to the use of presentation tools, web development, video/photo editing, word processing, etc.
  • Ability to attend various district/community events to support initiatives
  • Possess the judgment required for making decisions that affect large numbers or staff
  • Must be cooperative, congenial, service- oriented, and work well with others as a team
  • Effective organizational leadership and supervisory skills

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequently required to attend events
  • Frequently required to handle equipment necessary for the job
  • Lift/Carry up to 15 pounds
  • Have specific vision abilities to create promotional and other materials
  • Ability to answer phones and relay messages correctly

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Moderate noise exposure
  • Routine exposure to the outside elements during district events
  • Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current Act 34, Act 114 and Act 151 clearances
  • School Health Form (including physical and TB test)
  • PDE Form 6004 and Act 168 disclosure forms
